Skidometer

A full-screen GPS speedometer for iPhone. Privacy policy and support.

Privacy Policy

Skidometer does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. The app contains no networking code of any kind.

The app reads your device's location while it is open, for the single purpose of displaying your current speed. That reading is used to compute the number on screen and is immediately discarded. It is never written to storage and never sent off your device.

Specifically, and without exception:

Location access is requested the first time you open the app. If you decline, the speed display cannot work, but the built-in demo still does. You can change the permission at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Skidometer.

Because nothing is collected, there is nothing to request, export, or delete. Removing the app removes everything it ever had.

The display reads 0.0 and will not move. Skidometer shows GPS speed, so it reads 0.0 whenever you are not actually moving — including indoors, where GPS often cannot get a fix at all. Tap DEMO in the top-left corner to replay a recorded drive and confirm the app is working.

The number turned amber. That means the GPS signal dropped and the reading has gone stale — a tunnel, a parking structure, a dense city block. The app deliberately shows the last speed it actually measured rather than inventing one, and the colour tells you not to trust it until it turns red again.

It does not match my car's speedometer. It probably shouldn't. Vehicle speedometers are legally required to never read low, so most read 1–3 mph high by design. GPS speed is closer to your true speed over the ground.

Changing units, or stopping it rotating. Tap anywhere on the screen to cycle MPH, KM/H and knots. The rotation icon pins the current orientation, which is useful for a phone in a mount.

Skidometer is a supplement to your vehicle's own speedometer, not a replacement. Please keep your eyes on the road.
